The 39th International Baltic Musicological Conference



The 2006 Annual Baltic Conference will be held in Riga, Latvia, from October 9-11, 2006. This year Latvian Composers’ Union will collaborate with the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music within the framework of the 100th anniversary of composer Jānis Ivanovs (1906 - 1983).

24 scholars from 10 countries have submitted their papers for the conference. In addition to paper presentations, interdisciplinary events (personality in the aspects of sociology) and practical workshops (duo Violoncellissimo) will take place.Musicologists from the Baltic countries will provide an overview of current trends, new developments in their National music cultures.

For those specifically interested in Jānis Ivanovs an excursion to the Preili district in Latgale (close to EU/Russian border) will be organized, in order to visit historical places meaningful to Ivanovs, as well as the live broadcast performance of the Latvian Radio choir concert from Rezekne.

Numerous symphonic, choral and chamber music concerts of Ivanov’s music shall be held, thanks to support from the Latvian Academy of Music and the State Concert Agency.

For those participants who are interested there will also be opportunity to visit the University of Latvia and become acquainted with its activities, to examine materials in the Music Archive of the National Library, visit the music Publisher Musica Baltica, as well as to see and visit Riga’s most noteworthy architectural buildings and concert venues (the Dom Cathedral, churches of St. John and St. Peter, Philharmonic Concert Halls and the National Opera house).

The main language of the conference is English. The paper shall not exceed 20 minutes in duration. Conference abstracts, papers, summaries and discussions will be published. Moderator: Imants Mezaraups.
