Visby September 24-27, 2009 Gotland – the hub of trade across the Baltic Sea since the 12th century. A special place definitely not Sweden, in fact it did not become permanently Swedish in name until 1679. This has had a strong influence on culture and traditions. Gotland – a beautiful island in the midst of the Baltic Sea: the home of all winds! ”Listen to the Winds of the World!” What is the sound of today’s wind, the in- and exhalation of our time?Where does it come from? What messages does it carry? During the Gotland festival days we hope to find out whither the winds blow… Thus the Gotland festival days will resonate from the air that reaches us in the song and call, through many-sounding reeds and pipes: chamber choir, vocal ensemble, symphonic wind orchestra, wind quintet, saxophone quartet and organ. All providing music that is breathed, blown or pumped! But we will also open our ‘wind shutters’ for the symphony orchestra, right in the middle of the draught. Art music that leaves marks… ISCM World New Music Days is an extraordinary event on an island as small as Gotland, a singular, large happening we hope will leave deep, lasting marks. That is why we invite all ISCM members to submit music for two special publications:The ISCM Song Book 2009 & The ISCM Organ Book 2009 Word has it that Gotland has the greatest number of amateur choirs in Sweden in relation to the number of residents (58 000 ). On the other hand, that Gotland has the greatest number of medieval churches (1100 –1350) in relation to population is certain. There are 92 of them and many have excellent organs. We have noted this when planning the festival. Thus we invite all ISCM members to choose and submit one (1) contemporary piece for SATB choir and/or one (1) contemporary piece for organ no larger than two pages – and not too advanced! We will then – in collaboration with Wessmans Musikförlag – collect these pieces in two publications: The ISCM Song Book 2009 and The ISCM Organ Book 2009. The thought is to have these works practiced by local choirs and musicians with the festival in their sights.Ramon Anthin Artistic Director, Visby Estimated number of ISCM works, per category in Visby Chamber Choir5 works Vocal Quartet 8 works Symphonic Wind Orchestra 5 works Wind Quintet 8 works Saxophone Quartet 8 works Organ Music 6 works Symphony Orchestra 3 works ”The ISCM Song Book 2009” 1 work from each ISCM section* ”The ISCM Organ Book 2009” 1 work from each ISCM section* * VICC has established collaboration with Wessmans Musikförlag (www.wessmans.com) for these two publications. Visby International Centre for Composers (Visby Internationella Tonsättarcentrum) is a unique work and meeting place for composers all over the globe. VICC functions locally, nationally and internationally to promote contemporary art music through concerts, conferences, seminars, education and collaborative projects.
